First of all, stress is crucial for mechanical failure. A rotating shaft is mainly subject to torsional stress, beside other forms of stress depending on the application. If the torsional stress is higher than the yield strength of the shaft material, the shaft will experience plastic deformation and will fail eventually. It is also important to determine the level of vibration of the rotating shaft.
